Mesh

What is mesh?

Mesh is a material specifically designed to help reinforce a hernia repair. It has been proved to help reduce the risk of recurrence. Mesh has been around for decades and when inserted properly, it is very well tolerated.

What is mesh made out of?

There are three main categories of mesh types:

  • Synthetic
  • Biologic
  • Biosynthetic / absorbable

For most hernia repairs, a synthetic mesh is the cheapest and best option. These are usually made of polyester or polypropylene.

Can you perform hernia surgery without mesh?

The hernia developed because of a weakness in the abdominal wall. Mesh has been shown in multiple studies to prevent hernia recurrence, and it does not lead to increased chronic pain or other issues in the vast majority of patients. Therefore, synthetic mesh is recommended for the vast majority of hernia repairs.
