Patient Journey

Before Your Visit

Preparing for Surgery

Initial Consultation

Once an initial appointment request is made, our office staff will contact you to request some basic information, such as insurance and reason for appointment. Our office will also request records from your doctor, such as recent visit notes and imaging.

If you are interested in a virtual appointment, our physicians can perform an initial phone or video visit. An in-person visit may still be required later on to evaluate the hernia prior to surgery.

Preparing for Surgery

Initial Consultation

Everyone is nervous when they come to a physician's office, especially when coming to talk about surgery. Our friendly staff will try to make your appointment as pleasant as possible.

Please bring with you all old operative reports and any imaging (CD, reports) if you have them.

A lot of preparation goes into surgery. Some of the preparation may require:

  • Additional imaging
  • Consultation with anesthesia or cardiology
  • Holding certain medications
  • Weight loss

Our goal is to help you on this journey to be as prepared for surgery as possible. Please follow the link below to download an app desired for hernia patients!

Day of Surgery

The day of surgery can be overwhelming. Please remember to:

  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight
  • Only take your home medications as instructed
  • Look up parking options the day before

Please let us know how else we can make this day as smooth as possible.

Recovery Room

Care after Surgery

Patients wake up from general anesthesia in the recovery room. A nurse watches you closely during the first 30 - 60 minutes of recovery, treating pain and nausea as needed.

While in the recovery room, the nurses will closely monitor your vital signs. They will eventually ensure you are steady to walk and provide you with something to eat and drink.

You can be discharged once you meet the criteria to discharge, which typically includes:

  • Pain well controlled
  • Able to urinate
  • Able to walk without dizziness
  • Able to tolerate a light meal
